Well, WOULD you? It’s a tough question to answer – honestly, that is. Let’s start with your appearance. Are you clothes clean and pressed? Is your hair neat and clean? These sound like silly questions to ask a sales professional, but are they?
You may think those pink highlights and that tiny diamond nose piercing are very subtle, but in reality they can be very distracting to some people, and may stand in the way of you getting a sale – heck, of you even getting an appointment!
Does your company have a “casual day”? If so, keep in mind casual does not mean your gym shorts, favorite ball team t-shirt and rubber flip-flops (I know that seems ridiculous, but I have seen it!).
You are a SALES PROFESSIONAL. You should wear business clothing. Men, a shirt and tie most of the time, and depending on your clientele, khakis and a golf shirt with a collar are appropriate.
Ladies, remember it is NEVER okay to wear to work what you would wear to a nightclub. Slacks, skirts, suits. And please, please keep “the girls” covered. It is inappropriate and distracting to both men and women to have to meet with a woman whose is exposing too much of herself.
If you want to stand out and make an impression, there are better ways to do it.
One seller I know brings cookies to his key accounts on Tuesdays — a minimal investment for a man that makes six figures in annual commissions. Another seller I know brings a list of client references when meeting with a new client. She tells them to please contact these people if they would like to ask questions about her and the work that she does for them.
My mother is a barber. She tells me, “My clients say that they come to see me because I take care of them. I trim the hair on their neck, and offer a hot towel and a shave.” My parents spend four weeks in Arizona during the winter, and her clients actually plan their haircuts around her vacation!
My point is that regardless of what you do, in order to be successful, YOU must have your own Personal Branding Advantage.
I am sure you have things that you do to make yourself stand out. Please share!
Now, go sell something!
